A tribal man was dragged for nearly half a kilometre along a road in north Kerala's Mananthavady district by an unidentified gang after his thumb got caught in a car door. The incident occurred near a check dam at Koodal Kadavu on the evening of December 15. Television channels aired visuals of the event today.
The victim, Mathan, aged 49 and a resident of the Chemmadu settlement, sustained injuries to his hands, hips, and legs. He was dragged along the road by the car’s occupants, suspected to be tourists. The incident reportedly stemmed from a clash between two groups of tourists at the check dam.

A video showed one of the car’s occupants holding Mathan's hand through the window as the vehicle moved. Mathan was later admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

A police officer told news agency PTI, “Arguments broke out between two groups of tourists on Sunday. Local residents, including Mathan, intervened, which led to him being subjected to this act of cruelty."
The officer added, "We are investigating the incident and have not yet identified the accused. However, we suspect they are from Kuttipuram in the neighbouring Malappuram district."
Meanwhile, State SC, ST & BC Minister O R Kelu strongly condemned the incident on Monday and instructed the district police chief to take stringent action against the culprits. The minister termed the attack "very serious" and assured that all necessary steps would be taken to find and punish those responsible. He also directed health officials to provide expert treatment and care to the injured man.
